Forum for Research on the Languages of Scotland and Ulster
13th triennial conference (Munich 2021)

Main theme: “The languages of Scotland and Ulster in a global context, past and present”

The 13th triennial meeting of the Forum for Research on the Languages of Scotland and Ulster (FRLSU) will be run as an online event hosted by the Institute of English Philology at LMU Munich from 28 to 30 October, 2021.

We welcome contributions on any of the languages and varieties spoken, signed or written in Scotland or the nine counties of Ulster, from any linguistic perspective, modern or historical. We welcome papers from experienced academics as well as post-graduate and doctoral students.

In addition to topics falling within the broader scope of FRLSU, a thematic focus will be placed on the languages of Scotland and Ulster in a global context, past and present. We therefore particularly encourage the submission of papers which

  1. spotlight international research on the languages of Scotland and Ulster and
  2. explore linguistic aspects of global varieties of Scots and Scottish Gaelic, both historical and present-day.

All theoretical approaches, frameworks, and models are welcome. Comparative studies will be considered as will discussions of the use of language in literature. We are planning a dedicated online poster session, which is a format particularly suitable for the presentation of research projects in their early stages.

The plenary talks will be delivered by:

Marina Dossena (University of Bergamo)
Rob Dunbar (University of Edinburgh)
Ole Schützler (University of Leipzig)
